"I am well versed in the focus-stealing racket one can make with a vintage manual typewriter. I use a manual typewriter — and the United States Postal Service — almost every day."
Read Tom Hanks' full (great, funny, true) essay on the New York Times site.

This is great, thank you Richard!
"...the design masterpieces by Olivetti, go FITT FITT FITT like bullets from James Bond’s silenced Walther PPK. "
Yes!
I absolutely love it when Tom Hanks comes out and talks about typewriters. You can really tell he knows what he's talking about and has an actual passion for them.
Thanks for posting this!
Great article!
'Hanks' for posting this, Richard! That was a very amusing article and Mr. Hanks clearly shows a love and appreciation for these machines and all of the wonder, coolness, and (yes) exasperation that goes along with using them. Some of his views mirror my own.
Thanks for posting!
I love Tom Hanks article.. but here is the irony.. If the NY times wanted to make a larger impact on the story, then they should have scanned his typewritten pages in and printed them as an image! That would have had a larger impact and really drove the story home!
